FALLS PRESSURE SOARS & MUSCULAR ATROPHY KIT
Falls, Pressure soar, Muscular Atrophy.
The kit has three functions.
1.To cause an audible alarm if a patient at risk of falls attempts to leave the chair or mattress.
2.To cause a silent alarm (Flashing Light) to activate when a time set on the alarm monitor by clinical staff is reached.
3. To be used in combination with 1 and 2.
The kit consists of an alarmed chair cushion together with an alarmed mattress and an alarm monitor.

Off-Loading Pressure Sore & Muscle Atrophy
The kit has three functions. 1 To cause and audible alarm if a patient at risk of falling attempts to leave the chair or mattress. 2 To cause a silent alarm (flashing light) to activate when a time set on the alarm monitor by clinical staff  is reached. 3. To be used in combination with 1 and 2.

SUPPORTING RESEARCH
SCHEDULED OFF-LOADING
The importance of off-loading is highlighted in multiple studies concerning the formation and progression of pressure sores, and is currently being incorporated into our seating products, further to off-loading simply being a point in our instructions for use.
Point 2 of our instructions for use requires trust staff to ensure that regular off-loading takes place. Crane et al., 2016, demonstrates that this force-removal approach “effectively reduces a known extrinsic risk factor for pressure ulcers-interface pressure-in the high-risk ischial tuberosity and sacral/coccygeal regions of the buttocks."

Crane, B., Wininger, M., Call, E. 2016, Orthotic-Style Off-Loading Wheelchair Seat Cushion Reduces Interface Pressure Under Ischial Tuberosities and Sacrococcygeal Regions.
ENGAGEMENT OF MUSCLES
The importance of using leg muscles in vulnerable patients following surgery cannot be ignored. "The loss of lean tissue contributes to a decrease in muscle strength and power; important predictors of balance, the occurrence of falls..."
Excerpt from English, K and Paddon-Jones D. (2010). Protecting muscle mass and function in older adults during bed rest. Current Opinion in Clinical Nutrition and Metabolic Care, 13(1), pp. 34-39;
"In older adults, physical inactivity during hospitalisation is almost an accepted part of the inpatient experience, yet clearly contributes to a host of negative outcomes, including a reduction in the ability to perform activities of daily living ,increased of readmission and institutionalisation [4]."
MEMORY FOAM
Daley et al, 2013 used cushions with a top layer of Visco memory foam (vmf) to allow the immersion of bony prominences, and a bottom layer of firm foam providing stable support. This cushion structure is identical to Falls Care Limited Pressure Relieving Cushions. In this study all participants were using a (vmf) cushion, there was an 88.3% reduction in the incidence of pressure ulcers and skin redness in the group at the end when compared to the start of the study. The control group used cushions (e.g. air, gel & air alternating cushions) experienced 5% increase in pressure ulcers in the same period.
